Oil formation takes about 200 million years.
During the time that oil started forming on Earth it was a singular continent.
We call it oil now, but it use to be a layer of dead photosynthetic life like phytoplankton and algae.
There are five steps to form oil:
We call oil a non-renewable resource even though we could make more by this process but we still call it a non-renewable resource because the amount of time it takes is so long.

We call it oil now, but it use to be a layer of dead photosynthetic life like phytoplankton and algae.
There are five steps to form oil:
- A layer of sediment forms over an other layer of Photosynthetic life on the sea floor.
- An air tight seal is formed and an anoxic environment is created.
- Another layer of rock is formed creating a capping stone and extreme pressure and heat builds up.
- At between 50 - 120 degrees celsius the Photosynthetic life starts to turn into oil.
- Boundaries of clay or salt rock holds the oil back to make reservoirs.
