Day #1
The name of the research vessel that they Melville.
The vessel was part of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
This ship, fully loaded, weighs 3,026,000 lbs or 2,516 tons.
Day #3
The vertical migration of Zooplankton is when they go down to the depth during the day and rise up to the suface to feed on phytoplankton during the day.
Phytoplankton are small single celled organisms that feed on the light at the surface.
Day #6
They are trying to find out how many, what types and what kinds of zooplankton species.
CTD Stands for Conductivity, Temperature, Density.
Day #10
The "E-Front" is a front where the California currents meets the inshore currents and it was named that because they thought it looked like an eddy. The sampling that their tean waas doing had to be conducted at night because the zooplankton came up from the depth at that time to feed. The epipelagic zone is the light zone of the oceane where the zooplankton are collected during sampleing.

Day # 12
I believe the samples located at the actual front are where the green arrow is pointing. The chlorophyll samples where preserved by putting them in acetone then freezing them. The mesopelagic zone is the Deep water zone. And the kind of fish that live there are special because they have adapted to live in extremely high pressure and some have the ability to produce light from their body known as luminescence.
Day #14 The Styrofoam cups shrunk when lowered to depth because of Boyle's Law states that if you increase the pressure you will decrease the volume.Iron is important to Phytoplankton as a nutrient they need. The kind of precautions that they took to keep from metal contamination is that they keep their water supplies for testing all plastic containers.
Day # 21 The scientist can determain the amount of matter flowing through the ecosystem by looking at the amount of carbon in it.Marine Snow is Zooplankton waist or poop.
Day #24 Long-Lining is dangerous to marine birds because they see a fish on the hook eat it then get stuck on the line and as a result drown. The Fin whale is easily identified by their coloration and unusual position of the dorsal fin in relation to the blowhole. They eat Zooplankton, but prefer larger Zooplarnkton such as Krill. The Fin whale hasn't been commercially hunted because of their far distance from shore.
Day #26
Copepods are a type of Zooplankton and they are related to crabs and lobsters.
The Copepods are studied by seeing what the percentage of successful hatching of their eggs, and how many there are in certain areas at different times.
Day# 29
The bow dome is an underwater chamber that allows scientist to see outside the boat and look at the aquatic life that they pass by. The bow dome is located at the front of the boat.
A month at sea does sound interesting to me and a career in oceanography seems interesting.
